Award winning Harmonica virtuoso, Joe Powers is known throughout the world as a premier Tango artist, yet his musical interests also include Jazz-Fusion, Classical, Blues, Pop-Rock, Brazilian, Hip-Hop, Latin, New Age, World Traditions, and more.
He was the winner of the Belgian Crystal Harmonica Award in the Classical Division (2008) and received 4th place in Jazz Diatonic, at the World Harmonica Championship in Germany (2005). He continues to perform and teach throughout North and South America, Europe, Scandinavia, Japan and South Korea, appearing on TV and Radio, and collaborating with renowned artists and ensembles as diverse as the countries he visits.
While living in Buenos Aires he honed his Tango skills and over the years Joe has worked with top tango maestros such as: Emilio de la Peña, Raul Luzzi, Koji Kyotani, UK based "Tango Siempre", and Japan's top Tango ensemble Orquesta Aurora. Recently he has been featured with electro Tango groups: Otros Aires, Tanghetto, and Narcotango. He has also shared the bill with Tango stars such as Alberto Podesta, ColorTango, and "Gotan Project" singer Veronika Silva.
On stage he has been featured with groups as varied as Pink Martini, British pop icon Jamie Cullum, French Blues legend J.J. Milteau, and Canadian Boogie Woogie pianist Michael Kaeshammer. In addition he has performed and recorded with Smooth Jazz pioneer Tom Grant, Sony Jazz guitarist Yosuke Onuma, and pianist/producer Michael Allen Harrison to name a few.
Whether he's playing harmonica accompanied by a Japanese koto, a chamber orchestra, a Jazz big band, or backed by ten grand pianos at once, as he did for the "Ten Grands" concert at Seattle's Benaroya Hall (2010), Joe welcomes new musical adventures and thrives on expanding the horizons of his instrument.
His debut Solo Album, "Amor de Tango" was recorded in Buenos Aires in 2007 and features members of of the famed Leopoldo Federico Tango Orchestra, including Latin Grammy nominee, Nicolas Ledesma on piano.
The summer of 2009 saw the release of, "Melancolie" a collaboration with Grammy nominated, British composer/pianist, Michael Hoppé, featuring classically inspired, New-Age melodies.
Joe's album "Just Duet!" (2012) is a self-produced, eclectic musical journey from Tango, Brazilian Choro, traditional Chinese and Japanese music to Classical music, Jazz and more. The album features duets with 12 different instruments: koto, hammond B3, cavaquinho, erhu, guitar, piano, pipe-organ, vibraphone, tuba, violin, bandoneon, and banjo.
In 2012 his Tango quintet was featured with sold-out performances at one of North America's top Classical music series, the Oregon Bach Festival, sharing the bill with super star violinist, Joshua Bell. In 2013 he guest stared with the Vancouver Symphony orchestra kicking off their 35th season with double performances of the Gordon Jacob Harmonica Suite. Most recently on his 2016 world tour he gave a sold-out concert with the Barcelona Symphonic Band, and performed the Villa Lobos Harmonica concerto with the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra guest conducted by famous Bulgarian conductor, Emil Tabakov.
His fifth studio album, “Apasionado” was recorded in April, 2015 in Buenos Aires with some of Argentina’s top Tango musicians and features six of Joe’s original compositions as well as six Tango classics. More information at: www.joepowers.com
